I knew I would be home with sick kids a lot this year, since Graham is being newly exposed to all sorts of germs and grossness at daycare. I did NOT think that my first sick day of the year (yesterday) would be the result of a plugged milk duct. Ridiculous, and embarrassing to explain to coworkers. However, as my day of plugged ducts progressed, I realized that the situation also had a funny side.
Cons of Plugged Milk Ducts:
1) P-A-I-N. The milk keeps coming in, but there's nowhere for it to go. Sort of like your chest has to pee but you can't find a bathroom for 24 straight hours. When it hurts to bump into a loaf of bread (whole wheat, granted), you know you're in a bad way.
2) Cranky baby. Poor Graham was not pleased with the return on his efforts toward eating.
3) Lopsidedness. The left side was good, right side looked like a watermelon. I ended up wearing the biggest, baggiest sweater I owned in an effort to hide my Quasimodo-ish figure.
4) Pumping. I pumped approximately 487 times yesterday, yielding too little milk for an ant to survive on. (Yes, ants drink breast milk. Look it up).
Pros of Plugged Milk Ducts:
1) Being sent home from work after an early morning doctor appointment, while the kids are still in daycare. It wasn't exactly a relaxing day, but it was Q-U-I-E-T.
2) Funny comments. For instance, the doctor told me I should tell people my giant right side was my Halloween costume. Particularly inappropriate because she wanted me to tell the kids I work with.
3) Sympathy. It was nice to watch people cringe and to hear their support when I told them why I was going home. Made me feel special.
So what's the verdict? Plugged milk ducts: Funny AND painful!
